Operation Fortitude Fitness (Month #5)

Is it seriously June? Last I checked, June is month #6 in our calendar, which if my stellar math skills prove correct means we are nearly halfway done with 2012… seems like just 5 minutes ago we were ringing in the New Year.

I guess time flies when you are living for Jesus.

But a new month means another monthly reflection of my Smart Goals for 2012. So let’s hop to it!

SMART Change #1: Operation Fort-itude Fitness.  In short, my goal for 2012 is to log at least 98 miles per month via biking, swimming, running, elliptical etc to “travel” from Fort Benning, Georgia to Fort Riley, Kansas. Also, in order to stay on track with my strength training, I need to do 2,500 various reps per month. As of last update, I had logged 551 miles Jan-April and “arrived” in Thayer, Missouri.

RESULT: GOAL MET…  Sorta. May was a good month for working out. I started training for another 5K, which surprisingly kept my average mileage about the same but boosted intensity significantly. (It’s officially sweat season in Georgia, just for everyone’s info.) I still have about 3 weeks until my next 5K race, so I am excited to see where this training leads. (I have continued to break some personal records in this area… Praise you Jesus! I might become a “runner” after all.)

So this month, I logged 131.5 miles, mostly running on foot and at a higher intensity on stationary bike and elliptical. This brings my grand total to 682.5 miles since January. I have “arrived” just on the outskirts of Springfield, Missouri. Yeehaw! (Springfield is a great town. If I didn’t have to stick to a schedule, I might have to hang out there for a few days 🙂 )

Oh, and as far as the “sorta” part of this goal? Yeah, totally didn’t do much with strength training reps in May. Really gotta get back on that.

SMART Change #2: Spend significant time Lord’s presence by using my Jesus Calling Devotional and studying the accompanying Scripture. I will also continue to keep a prayer request list in a notebook and/or iPad.

RESULT: ON GOING I really lived and loved this goal in May. God’s Spirit is truly working in my life and I am watching prayers answered daily. (PS: I just received a new big kid parallel NIV/MSG study bible. I already LOVE it!) Oh, and in addition to this goal: In case you missed it, I attended the Blackaby Spiritual Leadership Coaching Conference. Talk about experiencing God in a whole new way!

SMART Change #3: Complete my 1000 Gift List (inspired by Ann Voskamp’s book) by the end of 2012.

RESULT: ON GOING  This month, I am at #941… an increase of  105 gifts from last month! I am relatively confident that I will “complete” this goal by reaching 1000 in June. But I shan’t be stopping. This is a wonderful scavenger hunt for God’s love!

SMART Change #4:   Memorize a book of the Bible, starting with 1 John.

RESULT: ON GOING Yeah, kinda fell short on this one– Didn’t make a lot of progress as far as memorizing new stuff this month, still hovering around the 1 John 4 area… But those first 3 chapters have created some new revelations and are really starting to sink in!

SMART Change #5: Ruthlessly Eliminate Hurry and submit to God DAILY in all areas of my life.

RESULT: ON GOING God is working. I keep asking to help Him to submit. It’s awesome. (I could write an entire post on this one alone. But I will spare you the details. For now.)

It Is Well… With My Soul

Sometimes, I pray while I exercise. And no, I am not talking about praying like “Please Lord Jesus, help me to finish this last half mile running strong, without throwing up or tripping on my own feet.” (Although I do frequently pray  something similar.)

In this particular case, I mean praying for others. Specifically those of you on my iPad Prayer List app. Now before you think I am trying to cut corners and multi-task, please know that 1) I still have my quiet time with Jesus in addition to my exercise prayer time 2) I never read/pray while on the treadmill, only the stationary bike and/or elliptical should I risk breaking my face and 3) For some unknown reason, I can concentrate and focus exceptionally well during a challenging workout, just as  good if not better than when I am sitting in my chair in my living room.

Yesterday was one of those occasions that I decided to pray for the numerous folks on my prayer list while burning calories. As I started hopping around on the elliptical and opened up my iPad, I was suddenly overwhelmed with all of the new prayer requests that were laid on my heart in the last 12 hours.

My mind flashed to the news article about some of my friends/schoolmates at K-State that were in a car accident over the weekend which resulted in fatalities. I remembered the Facebook status of a family from back home that were grieving the loss of their 15-year-old cousin from a hunting accident. Monday was the two month anniversary of my miscarriage. And finally, yesterday I had to say “See you later” to my beloved Mama as I dropped her off at the airport after what seemed as too-short of a visit.

Ever have one of those days when your heart and soul just feel heavy? Yeah. That was the feeling. Right as I was debating on quitting my workout mid-gait and running to the car to burst into tears, the acoustic version of “It is Well with My Soul” came through on my iPod.

Immediately, peace flowed through my heart. God whispered “I am bigger than all of these things, my beloved child. Rely on me… and it shall be well with your soul.”

That beautiful song, a song full of God’s love and promise, echoed in my mind for the rest of the day. With each tear that fell,  I was comforted. Strengthened. Hopeful. Prayerful.

Pumping Iron with Jesus

“Ninety-eight…ninety-nine… one-hundred!”

Oh hey. Didn’t see you there. Sorry, I was just working out… you know, pumping some iron, getting in shape. (Does that sound a little too much like Will Ferrell in Anchorman?) 

Obviously, I am not pumping iron… but instead am clicking keys. At a pretty rapid pace, I might add. But I didn’t get to this typing speed overnight.

I had to train. Practice. Become stronger in my skills.  Like my love of “training” to write/type, a lot of us desire to be stronger in various areas of our lives: physical, emotional, mental and spiritual.

Physical is probably the most well-known category of “strength training.” It really is pumping iron, doing lunges (yuck), mountain climbers (double yuck) or burpees. (Just that word sounds painful. Triple yuck.)

You probably have a few areas of mental strength training you are working on as well. Perhaps it is better memory or learning a new skill (auctioneering anyone?) Or, if you are really mentally motivated– possibly learning a new language (might I recommend Mandarin Chinese? That will keep you busy for awhile.)

When it comes to emotional strength training– now that starts to get a little bit tricky. If you ask me, it kind of overlaps with spiritual strength training. See, here’s the kicker– we have to be spiritually strong before we can be legitimately emotionally strong. We can’t let our feelings guide our faith– it has got to be the other way around.

So how do we build our spiritual strength which in turn boosts our emotional strength? Easy. We willingly pump iron with Jesus. Now as much as I despise burpees and multiplication tables when it comes to physical and mental strength training respectively, I personally believe that spiritual strength training can be the most painful– but also the most rewarding.

God chooses our weight and our exercise in the form of trials and challenges on this Earth. Think back to the last big, heart-challenging (possibly even devastating) event in your life. You had a choice on how to deal with it. Did you allow God to build your spiritual strength in that process?

As much as I don’t wanna admit it, all of those really tough life events HAVE and continue to make me a stronger person. (Why are Mama’s always right?) We are able to deal with those seemingly HUGE, heavy weights God chooses for us… because He doesn’t let us carry that weight alone. And He isn’t just a spotter– He is RIGHT THERE with us, holding onto that ginormous spiritual burden as we hoist it up over our head.

The world says we can’t do it alone. Well, great news. We don’t have to. We are training with God. We are becoming God strong because with each challenging life experience, we can choose to pump iron with Jesus.

Hurt So Good (Five Minute Friday)

Today, I am linking up with The Gypsy Mama and hopping aboard the “Five Minute Friday” experience. She gives us a prompt. Then we write, fingers flowing, purely for the joy of writing. For five minutes. And five minutes only. No editing. No profound outlines and thought development.

Just write. So today, join me on my first Five Minute Friday… Todays prompt: ACHE.


It’s 6am. I pry my eyelids open and attempt to roll out of bed. I groan. My body aches. I knew I shouldn’t have worked out so hard yesterday!

I complain about my aches and pains following a decent day’s workout. However, I also say that the hurt is a good thing– because it means I accomplished something the day before. It might not have been graceful and it hurts like a dirty word right now, but in a couple of days, the ache wears off and my body is stronger, better off than where it started.

The same can be said for my relationship with Christ. There are many times that I feel an ache in my heart– from loneliness (like being separated from my husband per army duties) or uncertainty about the future or simply confusion about my path. But with that ache comes a hope that only the ultimate healer can fix…

For every ache of my heart (or body or mind) there is an exponentially greater joy that wells up within me. It draws me closer to the one who sustains. He is my ultimate trainer and coach. God pushes me to levels that I never thought I would be able to endure– but yet He carries me through it.

In the end, my ache equals strength. And that strength equals hope. And the that hope equals the joy of living in His presence, living each day to glorify Him with a smile that stems from the deepest point of my soul.


WHEW. That was fun. It was intense– I feel like my fingers and brain just ran a mile sprint. Does that mean I still have to do my cardio workout today?

We have… a Heart Condition

Do you know what really grinds my gears?

The inaccuracy of the hand grip heart rate monitor things on the handles of treadmills. Are they EVER accurate?

Ok, maybe I should slow down a little bit. I am really not THAT upset about it, but it just makes me think sometimes. Perhaps you can help. Maybe I am not gripping them right? Whenever I work out on a treadmill (or elliptical, bike, anything with the fancy-schmancy heart rate grippy things) it never, ever seems to be even close to accurate.

It usually takes the majority of my workout to get a close to legit reading. I spend all that time trying to adjust my hands so it will show that I actually HAVE a pulse, and when it does, it gives some astronomical number on the verge of heart explosion. (I work hard, but not THAT hard. Seriously.)  Oh, and don’t get me started on how I feel when it occasionally blinks judgmental messages of “Do not run while gripping handles.” (Well if you would read my heart rate while I am walking/recovery, I wouldn’t have to, you stinkin temperamental machine…)

Here’s the great news about that story. God is OUR heart monitor. And a very accurate one at that. He knows our heart. It’s important to understand that regardless of what physical shape we are in, we ALL have a heart condition.

That is symptom #4 of being a human. We have a heart condition. As much as we would like to deny it or argue, we have sin in our heart. While I would love to blame Adam and Eve for messing it up, let’s be honest… If it wasn’t them, it would have taken 13.43 seconds before someone else came along who would have thought the snake’s ideas were great and screwed it all up. Oh, the “joys” of being a human.

Our sins give us a heart condition. But God is constantly “monitoring” our heart, much more effectively and accurately than the treadmill example. He knows everything in there and we don’t need surgery to clear the “blockages” (aka sin.) Why? Because we have Jesus!! (More on THAT tomorrow)

If you haven’t done so already and feel called, stop right now and ask Jesus into your heart. If you have already experienced that, then go ahead and ask Christ to continue clearing out the “junk.” He will condition your heart. He will strengthen it. He will be your accurate, never-ending tool to monitor your “heart condition.”

Next time you are on the treadmill and you begin to argue with the heart rate grippy things, remember… Jesus has got your pulse. And He IS the cure for our heart condition!
