Sometimes Flat Isn’t All That

“Hey, what do you want to drink?”

“Hmm… I will take a glass of Diet Dr. Pepper.”

“Ok, coming up.”

“Thanks…(gulp) OH YUCK. IT’S FLAT.”

We’ve all been there. We wait in anticipation for our favorite carbonated beverage only to be disappointed to realize all the fizz has departed long ago. Blah. The same goes for stale chips or popcorn. What a let down. Sigh.

Is your faith fizzy or flat?

On one hand, flat can be a good thing– flat stomachs, beautiful flat prairie, a house built on a level and flat foundation. But much like the example of soda pop, sometimes flat isn’t all that.

Flat soda. Flat tires. Flat flavor.  Flat line. Flat out. Flat faith.

Many people in the world are living “flatly,” satisfied with the status quo and social norm. Why go above and beyond when “barely” works? Great theory, but very unfulfilling. As Christians– we aren’t called to be flat. We need to rediscover our fizz.

Living flat faith might look like this: go to church on Sunday, say that we believe in Christ if cornered. That’s it. While it’s a great start, that kind of faith isn’t going to inspire anyone to take another drink. We can live a fresh, fizzy life– through words and actions in our life.

Fizzy faith is going to involve living a flavorful life of love. We can be kind. Love others. Be generous. Seek to be like Christ.

Everything we do speaks to who we are. When someone meets you, what do you them to know about you as they walk away? That you are flat and unflavorful? Just kinda there?  Or do you want to infuse them with some of your fresh Jesus fizz with your words and actions.

I don’t know about you, but I want to live as if I am fresh can of soda, full of flavor and fizz… not a trace of flat.

Is your faith fizzy? Or has it gotten a little stale and flat lately? What do you think you could do to regain a fizzy faith that is encouraging and inspiring to those around you? I would love to hear your feedback. Leave a comment below.

It might be time to check your fizzy faith factor. Ask the Lord to make your faith life flavorful again because let’s be honest– sometime flat isn’t all that.

Bubbling over,

“Salt is excellent. But if the salt goes flat, it’s useless, good for nothing. “Are you listening to this? Really listening?”‘ –Luke 14:34 MSG

Wake Up & See (Five Minute Friday)

It’s the moment we’ve all been waiting for… Ok, at least the moment I really look forward to all week– It’s Five Minute Friday!

For those of you just joining our 7 Days Time Journey… Each Friday, I link up with The Gypsy Mama. She gives us a prompt. Then we write. For five minutes flat. No overthinking, no  excessive editing.

It’s been a crazy week in the world of ministry, so enough chitty chatting from my end. Let’s get to it.

Todays prompt: SEE

Beep, beep, beep! My alarm. My arms flail towards my nightstand, slapping my phone to make it stop. Very slowly, I open my eyes. For a few brief moments, my vision is blurry. But soon my eyes adjust to the world around me and I can see. It’s going to be a good day.

But sometimes it doesn’t quite happen so nicely. Ever had anyone come into the room and throw on the light with no warning? OW! GEEZ! OK, I’m up! (And you better run, cuz I am coming after you. THAT HURT.)

That method words to help me wake up and see as well… but it is a lot less pleasant.

Waking up is hard to do. (Isn’t that  a song? Oh wait…) If we are completely honest with ourselves, we could probably agree that most of us are living in darkness, blind to the world around us. But we all have One thing that can clear up our sight and wake us up immediately– but way less painfully than just throwing on the light.

That’s right. Jesus is our light to help us see. And He wakes us up ever-so-gently. (Unless we refuse to wake up and see at all– but that’s another blog post.)

Amazing Grace was (and still is) one of my favorite hymns when I was growing up. In fact, I used to sit on the sink counter, and sing it alongside my Daddy as we “shaved” our faces together. “Twas blind, but now I see.”

What an incredible promise. Jesus can gently and lovingly be the light that helps us wake up and see the world around us.

All we have to do is open our eyes.

Ahhh… The Five Minute Friday rush never gets old. Such a refreshing exercise! Oh, and by the way…  Don’t be shy… If you feel so led, leave a comment below. Seriously, hearing from you wonderful Jesus cheerleaders is so encouraging and keeps us rocking and rolling here at 7 Days Time.

Praying that your weekend rocks and I will see you right back here on Monday.

Five Minute Friday High Five,

“We don’t yet see things clearly. We’re squinting in a fog, peering through a mist. But it won’t be long before the weather clears and the sun shines bright! We’ll see it all then, see it all as clearly as God sees us, knowing him directly just as he knows us!” -1 Corinthians 13:12 (MSG)

Salt and Light (Five Minute Friday)

Praise the Lord for Five Minute Friday! Why, you ask my dear reader? Well, I am learning a lesson on what it means to be a Jesus blogger and temporary Mama. I offered to watch a friend’s two little precious girls overnight so they are currently ankle deep in toys in my living room watching Tangled.

Needless to say– my attention is a bit divided.

On that note, time to get down to business… Of Fridays I link up with The Gypsy Mama. She gives us a one word prompt, and we write like the wind for five minute. No over thinking, no editing.

Today’s prompt: LIGHT

Ready? GO!

“Let me tell you why you are here. You’re here to be salt-seasoning that brings out the God-flavors of this earth. If you lose your saltiness, how will people taste godliness? You’ve lost your usefulness and will end up in the garbage.”Here’s another way to put it: You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We’re going public with this, as public as a city on a hill. If I make you light-bearers, you don’t think I’m going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I’m putting you on a light stand. Now that I’ve put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand—shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you’ll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven.” –Matthew 5:13-16 (MSG)

What does it mean for YOU to be the salt and the light of the earth? That’s a great question and I am discovering it for myself daily. Call me an informal Friday slacker… But I don’t think it is any accident that I spent the better part of yesterday morning walking around belting out the song “Salt and Light” by Jami Smith. So today, I would like to share that video. (Of Jami singing it… not me. I really don’t want me first vlog to be me with fuzzy hair in PJ’s singing a very-low octave song.

Tell someone about Jesus today– be the salt and the light! And don’t forget to enjoy this video!

Now if you will excuse me… I am on a pancake-making mission for these little ones… and it’s getting to my favorite part of Tangled– can’t miss it! 🙂

Keeping it Bright and Salty,

Salt is excellent. But if the salt goes flat, it’s useless, good for nothing. “Are you listening to this? Really listening?”– Luke 14:34
