Cool story, Bro.

Our first dance started out all sweet and romantical… Then we busted out the salsa. With maracas. Seriously. I guess you had to be there.

“DUDE! It was awesome! There was like this guy and these three girls, and they sang some stuff, and then the stage lit up and sparks showered from the ceiling.”

Ever tried to share an incredible story or experience with someone and you are met with a dumbfounded look of incomprehension? When that happens in our household, my husband often says “Huh. Cool story, bro.” (Even though I’m not his bro. I’m his wife. But that’s besides the point.)

Or ever tell a story and realize halfway through that the other person just doesn’t get it? We usually end the description of our incredible experience with a comment like “And then I found five dollars” or “I guess you had to be there.”

Well, sometimes you do have to be there. Some things in life are meant to be experienced.

Like bungee jumping. (Not for this girl, though.) Or a really great frozen yogurt flavor. (That’s more my style.) Or listening to a great speaker at a conference. Or maybe… God.

Experiencing God is much different from acknowledging that He exists.

“But Sharita,” you think in protest. “I don’t have time/energy/cash/ability to go to the top of a beautiful mountain peak or lay in a field watching clouds to experience God.”

Au contraire, my friend. (French lesson of the day: That means “on the contrary.” Just in case you were reading this blog for simply informational purposes.)  God can be experienced everyday, right where you are, in more ways than you can imagine!

Think about your five senses. We are made to feel. Hear. Smell. Taste. See.  When we experience the small sweet things in life that move our heart, it’s probably one of those little “Experiencing God” gift moments.

We can experience God…

When we smell that pot of coffee brewing on an early morning.

When we feel the protective, loving hug from a friend as we cry.

When we taste the explosion of flavors from a new recipe.

When we hear the mourning dove welcoming in another day.

When we see a baby take her first steps across the living room floor.

God is everywhere. He is meant to be experienced. But the key is we have to be aware of His presence. We have to be on the lookout for Him.

When/where/how do you experience God? How does God show up through your five senses? I have my list of God’s gifts and experiences that make my heart sing His praises. What are some items on your list? Please share your joy by leaving a comment below!

When we experience God fully in our lives in every moment of our day, it can become contagious. Pretty soon others catch our joy and instead of us just telling about it, they too can experience it. Then and only then, when we are sharing our incredible experiencing God moments with them, they can say “Cool story, bro…” And actually mean it.

Living in experience not just existence,
SGK

“I write this to you whose experience with God is as life-changing as ours, all due to our God’s straight dealing and the intervention of our God and Savior, Jesus Christ. Grace and peace to you many times over as you deepen in your experience with God and Jesus, our Master.” ~2 Peter 1:1-2 (MSG)

  1. I was planning to go to a funeral the other day. For a baby )o: the little man was born straight to Heaven. I forget the million dollar word for his condition (born without the top part of his skull & without a brain) ….. My plan was to go and support his parents. Then God did something GREAT. I totally forgot about the funeral and took my 4 kiddos to the waterpark. I found myself Thanking HIM for little things: the money to have a day like that, the ability to physically make it up the steps to take my 2 little ones down the fun waterslide, my kids’ health as they ran around splash & enjoying the day.
I didn’t realize what a gift that day was until I started reading different posts on FB about the funeral. God is good …. He knows what we need and He is so willing to give it.
Experiencing God is something I pray everyone does. He’s right here, right now …… Just say His name and you will see, feel, hear, taste and bask in the aroma of HIM!! Even sitting right here at my sticky kitchen table with a 4yr old looking thru her new morning devotional!! (o: **so much for QUIET time!!! LOL**
Oh thank you Sharita ……. you put a smile on my face and a bit of GOD PEP in my step today!!!
    Thank you!!! LOVE you!!! (o:

    • Oh Susan… What a love-packed testimony of God’s love. I am praising Jesus right now for giving you what you need, even if it seemed different than what the world would say might have been obligation. I am so thankful for Him coming down to let you experience Him… And yes, God sits at our table– even if it is a lil sticky. Blessings to you sweet friend. Love you too!

  2. Last night I went to a super summer service. When we were singing about God and I was so into it,I got goosebumps here I am shivering when everybody is sweating and complaining how hot it is….I don’t know if that qualifies but that’s the how. When, I am reading your posts I can often hear words of wisdom. I kinda pretend this is my devotional…can you do that? Well I’m guessing for the where part its kinda everywhere when we wake up and see the sunlight gods blessing us with another day, or telling us to fix something that we really need to work on. Well keep up the good work cuz, I really enjoy reading your blogs 🙂 love ya

    • That’s incredible, Hailey. Yes girl, yes, YOU experienced God!! I am so pumped for the breakthroughs you are seeing in your life!! There is really no wrong way to experience Him 🙂 And yes, you can pretend this is your devotional all you want, but keep reading the Bible every chance you can. Thanks for your comment, honey. Love you and I’m praying for ya!

  3. What a great reminder to look for God in the simple things. It’s true that He can be experienced in all the moments of life. Right now, I’m sitting on my parents’ back patio, reading blogs, listening to the dog bark continuously, and watching my son play in the dirt. What a blessing.

    • Oh wow, Mary Beth– I’m not even THERE and I can feel the power of the Lord. That’s awesome. Thanks for sharing your experiencing God moment with us today 🙂

  4. I love this! You are so hit-the-nail-on-the-head right. 🙂 Cool story, bro! 😉

    • Ha ha, thanks Mindy. God really makes me giggle when it comes to the crazy things He encourages me to write about. Seriously. 🙂

  5. I love this, Sharita! I’m all about finding God in the ordinary stuff of life, and I seem to be especially tuned into His voice while I’m folding laundry. Go figure 😉

But I’m with you in that I experience Him when I have my coffee, when I take the dog out, when I see the sun rise/set. It’s awesome to feel that connection to Him ALL DAY LONG.

Thanks for sharing and encouraging your readers to put God on their radars!

    • Amen, Susan! God IS with us all day long- even as we sort through dirty socks in the laundry or tackle that mound of dishes in the sink. Fortunately, He also shows Himself in the sweet areas of life, just like you mentioned to. Thanks so much for contributing to the conversation– great thoughts. Blessings to you!

I am right there with you, sister! (And I love that, “Cool story, bro.” LOL.) I fall in love with God all over again every time I open my senses to his presence. Just this morning I sat on the beach, watching my children play in Lake Ontario. There was so much to take in. The climax of the morning was the children squealing over a swan floating by. Sight and sound… joy!

    • Tereasa– Yes! Falling in love with God is… well… like falling in love. So glad for your Jesus beach time with your lil ones– that is pure joy! Thank you for your comment 🙂

  7. Joan

This is a wonderful post, Sharita and I’m reminded of the old hymn, “This is my Father’s World.” Some of the words are “in the rustling grass I hear Him pass, He speaks to me everywhere…” Yes, we can experience God everywhere, in every circumstance.

    Blessings,
    Joan

    • Thanks for sharing the words of that hymn, Joan. That’s great and really speaks to me as well. I appreciate your feedback. Blessings to you friend!

  8. I love your approach and all around it was a great post. Sometimes I want to share an experience I had with God with someone and if they have never had an/the experience with God they just don’t understand no matter how awesome it was.

    -Iris♥

    • Very true, Iris– but the more we share our experiences with others, even if they don’t understand, the more intrigued they will be. (Think about when we describe a new restaurant to someone– if we love it enough, they might eventually decide to go try it out for themselves!)

I encourage you to keep sharing your story– God will do the rest. Thanks so much for stopping by. Be blessed!
